Too many keys for too many doors?

Master Key System Oakland CA — One Key Plan for Every Door

A master key system lets each person carry one key that opens only the doors they need, while the owner or manager carries one key that opens them all. We design, pin and install master key systems for Oakland offices, buildings, restaurants and warehouses, with the price confirmed before work starts.

How Master Keying Works

One Key per Person, Only the Doors They Need

Here is a simple master key plan for a small Oakland office. Tap a key to see which doors it opens. Every system we design starts with a chart like this, built around your doors and your people.

Front Entrance
Back Door
Office
Storage Room
Server Closet
Restrooms

Who Uses Master Keys

Master Key Systems for Oakland Properties

A master key system pays off as soon as more than a handful of people need different access. These are the properties we plan them for most often in Oakland.

Office Buildings and Suites

Staff, managers, cleaning crews and contractors each get the access they need. One manager key replaces a heavy key ring.

Apartment and Condo Buildings

Each tenant key opens only their unit and the shared entries, while the property manager carries one key for maintenance and emergencies.

Restaurants and Retail

Kitchen staff, managers and delivery doors on separate keys, with the office and cash room kept to the people who need them.

Warehouses and Light Industrial

Personnel doors, cages and storage areas keyed by role, so a lost key does not expose the whole building.

Built on Your Existing Locks

Most master key systems are built by rekeying the locks you already have, so the hardware stays and only the cylinders change. See our lock rekeying service, or our commercial locksmith service for other business lock work.

How It Works

From Key Chart to Working System

A master key system is planned on paper before a single pin is cut. Getting the chart right is what keeps the system secure and easy to grow later.

1. Walk the Doors and People

We list every door and who needs to open it: owners, managers, staff, cleaners and contractors. That becomes the key chart.

2. Design the Key Chart

We group doors and people into levels, keep the number of extra pin combinations low and leave room for doors you may add later.

3. Pin and Install

We rekey your existing cylinders to the chart, or replace the ones that are worn, then test every key on every door it should and should not open.

4. Key Records You Keep

You get the chart and a key log showing who holds which key, so a lost key means rekeying one level, not the whole building.

A Stamp Does Not Stop Copies. A Restricted Key Does.

"Do Not Duplicate" stamped on a key is often ignored by key-cutting kiosks. For real key control, we can set the system up on a restricted keyway, where blanks are not sold to the public and copies are only cut on authorization.

Master Key FAQ

Master Key System FAQ

What Oakland owners and property managers ask most before master keying a building.

What is a master key system?

A set of locks pinned so that each person’s key opens only certain doors, while a master key opens a group of doors and a grand master key opens all of them.

Can you master key the locks I already have?

Usually, yes. Most systems are built by rekeying existing cylinders. We only replace a lock when it is worn, damaged or not compatible with the system.

What happens if someone loses a master key?

It depends on the level. A lost change key means rekeying one door or group. A lost master key affects more doors, which is why we keep a key log and recommend restricted keys for the top levels.

Is a master-keyed lock less secure?

Master keying adds pin combinations to each lock. A well-designed chart keeps them to a minimum, and a high-security or restricted cylinder can be used for sensitive doors.

Do “Do Not Duplicate” keys really stop copies?

Not reliably. Many key-cutting machines ignore the stamp. A restricted keyway, where blanks are controlled, is what actually limits copies.

How much does a master key system cost in Oakland?

It depends on the number of doors, levels and whether existing cylinders can be reused. We walk the doors, design the chart and confirm the price before any work.

Still Not Sure What Your Building Needs?

You do not need to diagnose the problem yourself. Tell us about the building, the doors and who needs access. You can request service here .
